Marjon takes its name from the two colleges that founded it: St John's College in Battersea, whose first students arrived in 1840, and St Mark's College in Chelsea, from 1841. Founders James Kay-Shuttleworth and Derwent Coleridge began by training orphans from the local workhouse to become teachers. The colleges amalgamated in 1923 and became known as Marjon. In 1973 the college moved to Plymouth after outgrowing its Chelsea campus, and it gained full university status in 2013. It is a small university, with 4,850 students in 2024/25.
