Piedmont University in Demorest, Georgia, opened in 1897 as the J.S. Green Collegiate Institute, taking in about 367 students that first year, from first graders to college juniors. It became J.S. Green College and then Piedmont College around 1902 to 1903, depending on the source. Methodists founded it, and Congregationalists took it over in the early twentieth century. Demorest itself was founded in 1889 by a land and mining improvement company, so the school grew along with the town. In April 2021 the Board of Trustees renamed it Piedmont University, citing the growth and change of the previous two decades. The input listing carries the older College name, but the school is operating under its current name. Piedmont now serves residential and online students with undergraduate and graduate offerings from its setting in the north Georgia foothills.
