Pensacola State College began as Pensacola Junior College, Florida's first public junior college established under the Minimum Foundation Program Law in 1947. Classes opened on September 13, 1948 in a donated boarding house at Palafox and Cervantes streets with 136 students under director James L. McCord; James H. Allen of Florida Pulp and Paper Company covered two years of rent. Growth forced a move in June 1953 to the former Pensacola High School building, and Henry L. Ashmore became its first president in 1954. The college kept the junior college name until 2010, when it became Pensacola State College. Its catalog histories describe later expansion to additional campuses in the Pensacola area, though those dates were not independently verified here. It sits in the Florida Panhandle, belongs to the Florida College System, and awards associate and select bachelor's degrees.
