Palm Beach State College opened on November 14, 1933 as Palm Beach Junior College, Florida's first public community college, with 41 students in a building next to Palm Beach High School. Civic groups lobbied for a two-year college for graduates who could not find work in the Great Depression, and Howell Watkins served as its first dean. John I. Leonard became president in 1936. The college moved to Morrison Field in 1948 and to Lake Park Town Hall in 1951, when enrollment fell below 200. The county then donated 114 acres in Lake Worth and the state gave one million dollars for buildings; Harold Manor became president in 1958 and led rapid growth. The Lake Worth campus remains its largest. The college now has five campuses, in Lake Worth, Boca Raton, Palm Beach Gardens, Belle Glade and Loxahatchee Groves, and enrolls more than 40,000 students annually.
