Paine College is a private, historically Black college in Augusta, Georgia, jointly sponsored by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the United Methodist Church. Bishop Lucius Holsey first proposed the school in 1869, and its Board of Trustees, three members from each church, met for the first time on November 1, 1882. Classes began in January 1884 in rented rooms on Broad Street, and in 1886 the school moved to its present site on Fifteenth Street. It was named for Bishop Robert Paine and started as Paine Institute, with a high school component that continued until 1945. The name became Paine College in 1903. John Wesley Gilbert, the school's first student and first graduate, joined the faculty in 1888, beginning a tradition of a biracial faculty. Today Paine is a small liberal arts college that remains tied to its founding churches and to the Augusta community.
