The University of Olivet, formerly Olivet College, is a private Christian institution in Olivet, Michigan. According to its history page, it was started in 1844 by Congregational minister John J. Shipherd, who believed education should be open regardless of gender, race or means. The state denied it a charter in 1845 because of its abolitionist beliefs, but it kept operating, and a charter was granted in 1859. Its first class graduated in 1863. Wikipedia describes it as the second coeducational college in the United States, and notes the board approved the change from Olivet College to University of Olivet in 2023. The Soronian Society, founded in 1847, was the first women's literary society in the country, and Olivet helped found the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1888. The university now serves more than 1,000 undergraduate, adult professional and graduate students, and its Comets compete in NCAA Division III.
