Oglethorpe University is a private liberal arts university on Peachtree Road in Brookhaven, just north of Atlanta. Presbyterians chartered it in the 1830s and it opened in 1838 at Midway near Milledgeville, then the state capital. The Civil War closed it in 1862, an Atlanta revival ran briefly from 1870 to 1872, and in 1913 the state rechartered it as a non-denominational school under Thornwell Jacobs. Classes began on the present campus in 1916. Philip Weltner, who became president in 1944, introduced the Oglethorpe Idea and a core curriculum that is still part of the degree. Sources disagree on the original charter year, giving 1834 or 1835. Spring 2026 commencement was held on May 9 with Southern Company CEO Chris Womack as speaker, and the university reported more than 400 students on the spring dean's list.
