Nova Southeastern University began in 1964 as Nova University, a graduate school of the physical and social sciences that opened with an inaugural class of 17 students on former airfield land in Fort Lauderdale. The present institution took shape in 1994 through a merger with the Southeastern University of Health Sciences, which had started in 1981 as an osteopathic medicine college and later added pharmacy, optometry and other health programmes. Its main base is a 314-acre campus in Davie, next door to Florida Atlantic University, and the university also operates sites in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Denver, Colorado. NSU is a private, research-oriented university, and in fall 2023 it reported 20,877 students, roughly 7,219 of them undergraduates and 13,658 postgraduates. First-time undergraduates can apply through the Common App or NSU's own Shark Select application, the essay is optional, and standardized test scores are not required.
