Northumbria's roots lie in 1877, when Dr John Hunter Rutherford founded a School of Science and Art to educate people from every background. Newcastle Polytechnic was formed in 1969 by merging Rutherford College of Technology, the Municipal College of Commerce and the College of Art and Industrial Design, and it gained university status in September 1992. The main City Campus is in the centre of Newcastle, with Coach Lane on the edge of the city and sites in London and Amsterdam. Four faculties organise around 30,000 students: Arts, Design and Social Sciences; Business and Law; Engineering and Environment; and Health and Life Sciences.
