Northeastern Illinois University is a public university on Chicago's north side at 5500 N. St. Louis Avenue. It traces its origins to 1867, when the Normal School opened in Blue Island as Cook County's first teacher training institution. After several names and moves it became Northeastern Illinois State College and, in 1971, Northeastern Illinois University. It was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution in 1997, and its El Centro campus, established in 1969, serves the Latino community. Enrollment was about 5,700 students in fall 2024. Teacher education remains a core strength alongside liberal arts and professional programs.
