Nicholls State University is a public university in Thibodaux, Louisiana, on Bayou Lafourche about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans, and part of the University of Louisiana System. It opened on September 23, 1948, as Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University and now sits on a 287-acre campus. Nicholls is known for culinary arts, through the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute, which is the only American member of the Institut Paul Bocuse, and for its bachelor's degrees in culinary arts. It also offers programs in nursing, business, education, marine and environmental science, and graduate studies. The Colonels compete in NCAA Division I in the Southland Conference, and the Pride of Nicholls marching band is a campus tradition. First-time freshmen are admitted on the Regents core curriculum and GPA criteria.
