New York University Abu Dhabi (NYU Abu Dhabi) traces its origins to a partnership announced in November 2007 between NYU and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, with a New York headquarters established in 2009 and the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program launched in 2008 to support talented Emirati students. Classes began in September 2010 with 148 students at a provisional downtown campus, and the university graduated its first class in May 2014, the same period its permanent Saadiyat Island campus was completed following construction that started in 2011. NYU Abu Dhabi describes itself as a comprehensive liberal arts, sciences and engineering university operated by a leading American research university, offering 26 undergraduate majors across the arts and humanities, engineering, science and social science, along with graduate and PhD programmes delivered through NYU's Tandon School of Engineering and Graduate School of Arts and Science.
