New York Film Academy was founded by producer Jerry Sherlock in 1992, and its Abu Dhabi campus was set up in 2008 with the support of the late H.E. Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei. The school is built on a learning-by-doing philosophy, with students encouraged to actually make films as the core of their coursework rather than relying mainly on theory. Programmes cover Filmmaking, Acting for Film, 3D Animation and Visual Effects, Broadcast Journalism, Cinematography, Digital Editing, Documentary Filmmaking, Game Design, Graphic Design, Musical Theater, Photography, Producing and Screenwriting, offered as short workshops, one-year programmes and two-year associate degrees.
