New College of Florida sits on a 110-acre campus on Sarasota Bay. Sarasota civic leaders concluded in the late 1950s that their community was an ideal site for a college; it was chartered in 1960 and opened in fall 1964 with a first class of 101 students. It became part of the state university system, and in 2001 it became an autonomous college, the eleventh independent school of the State University System of Florida and its designated honors college. The college describes itself as the public Honors College of Florida, with more than 50 undergraduate majors and a master's degree in data science. Its website reports 698 students and more than 90 full-time faculty, while Wikipedia lists 710 students in fall 2023 and Data USA reports 881 for 2024. Data USA also shows 1,623 applications in 2024 with 1,188 admitted, a 73.2 percent acceptance rate.
