The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey is a graduate-only institution of the US Navy, founded in 1909. It educates officers from the US uniformed services, Department of Defense and other government civilians, a limited number of contractors, and officers from allied nations. A third-party figure of about 2,700 students dates from 2019. Departments cover areas such as operations research, defence analysis, engineering, computer science and applied sciences, and distance learning options exist for some programmes. Admission is by eligibility and sponsorship rather than open application: selection looks at professional performance, promotion potential and academic background, and final decisions rest with the academic department. Admissions are reported to be rolling, and international students generally need government sponsorship. Its admissions office is in Herrmann Hall on the Monterey campus and can be reached at admissions@nps.edu.
