The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) was established in Bangalore in 1986 as India's first national law university, inaugurated on 16 July 1986 by then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, following a proposal by former Chief Justice P.N. Bhagwati and the founding leadership of Professor Madhava Menon. NLSIU's core programmes remain based in India, including its flagship 5-year integrated BA LLB (Hons), a 1-year Master of Laws (LLM), a 2-year Master's in Public Policy, and doctoral programmes in Law and in Social Sciences. Its presence in Dubai reflects NLSIU's wider outreach connecting Indian legal education with the region's Indian expatriate community.
