National Defense University Washington, D.C.

National Defense University is a federal staff college funded by the US Department of Defense and operating under the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It was established in 1976 at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C., with Marmaduke G. Bayne as its first president. The university brings together several professional military education institutions: the National War College, the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy (formerly the Industrial College of the Armed Forces), the College of Information and Cyberspace, the Joint Forces Staff College, the College of International Security Affairs and the National Intelligence University. Its stated mission is the education, training and professional development of national security leaders. Students are mainly senior military officers, senior federal civilians and international fellows, typically at O-5/O-6 or GS-14/GS-15 level or equivalent, who attend through nomination rather than open application. Wikipedia lists around 1,500 students. Vice Admiral Peter Garvin has served as president since October 2024.
