Naropa University in Boulder was founded in 1974 as Naropa Institute by the Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa, and was renamed in 1999 for an 11th-century Indian Buddhist sage. It was the first Buddhist-inspired institution to gain U.S. regional accreditation, which it received in 1988. Contemplative education, including meditation, runs through the curriculum, with programs in psychology and counselling, environmental studies, religious studies, peace studies, the arts and writing. The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, named for the Beat writer, has drawn many poets to teach there. Wikipedia lists about 402 undergraduates and 617 postgraduates, though it gives no year for those numbers. In August 2024 the university announced plans to sell its main Arapahoe Avenue campus while keeping the Nalanda campus; it does not expect to leave before June 2027. Athletic teams use the name Bodhi Cheetahs. Alumni include musician Gregory Alan Isakov and writer Lesléa Newman.
