Morgan State University is a public historically Black research university in Baltimore, Maryland, on a campus in the northeast part of the city. It traces its origins to 1867, when the Methodist Episcopal Church established the Centenary Biblical Institute to prepare Black men for the ministry. The school became Morgan College in 1890, named after its early board chairman Lyttleton Morgan, and the State of Maryland purchased it in 1939, renaming it Morgan State College. It gained university status in 1975 and today is designated Maryland's public urban university. Morgan offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees across schools such as engineering, business, education, social work, architecture and planning, and public health. It is a member of the Maryland public higher education system and competes in NCAA Division I athletics in the MEAC. Its first-year admissions page describes a holistic review with optional test scores.
