The Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government was launched in 2005 as the Dubai School of Government, under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, becoming the first research and teaching institution dedicated to governance and public policy in the Arab world. Its programmes were initially developed with the Harvard Kennedy School, a formal affiliation that ended in 2011, and in December 2009 the school graduated its first cohort of 32 students from an intensive one-year Master of Public Administration programme aimed at mid-level public sector professionals. The school continues to combine education and training with research aimed at strengthening governance across the UAE and the wider Arab world.
