Mississippi University for Women, nicknamed The W, is a public, coeducational liberal arts university in Columbus, Mississippi. The Mississippi Legislature established it on March 12, 1884 as the Industrial Institute and College for the Education of White Girls, and the first session began in October 1885. It was renamed Mississippi State College for Women in 1920 and Mississippi University for Women in 1974. It was the first public women's college in the United States at its founding, and it admitted men after the 1982 Supreme Court decision in Mississippi University for Women v. Hogan. The school is known for the Owls athletic program, alumna Eudora Welty and a 1971 women's basketball national championship. A 2024 rebranding effort was halted, so the name is unchanged. It offers over 70 undergraduate majors, online programs and graduate degrees.
