Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) is a public research university in Houghton, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula. It was founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School. It enrolls about 7,400 students, around 6,000 of them undergraduates, and is best known for engineering, which historically draws the largest share of students. It holds a Carnegie Research 1 classification, and its men's hockey team has won three NCAA Division I national championships. Michigan Tech's admissions pages describe a mostly transcript-based process: domestic first-year applicants receive a decision based on their official high school transcript, and test scores are optional. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 and homeschool applicants may be asked for SAT or ACT scores or other documentation. Students can apply with the Michigan Tech application or the Common App.
