Michigan State University is a public land-grant research university in East Lansing, Michigan. It was established in 1855 when Governor Kinsley S. Bingham signed the bill creating the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, and it is recognised as the first agricultural college in the U.S. and the first land-grant college. Wikipedia reports 51,838 students in spring 2026, including 41,425 undergraduates and 10,423 postgraduates. MSU runs the world's first state-funded osteopathic medical college, pioneered studies in music therapy and supply chain management, and hosts the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. Its first-year admissions are test-optional, and the university states there are no minimum requirements, although admission is competitive and decisions weigh academic performance and curriculum strength.
