Miami Dade College began in 1960 as Dade County Junior College, starting on a former high school farm, with a first class of 1,428 students; the converted buildings earned it the nickname Chicken Coop College. It desegregated in 1962, and some sources place its founding in 1959. Enrollment rose fast, passing 15,000 by the mid-1960s, and by 1967 it was the largest institution of higher education in Florida. Wikipedia lists 47,245 undergraduates for fall 2022, and company profiles describe more than 120,000 students a year across eight campuses and outreach centers when non-credit learners are counted. The main downtown Miami address is 300 NE 2nd Avenue. Because the college serves such a large and diverse population, it is often cited among the biggest degree-granting institutions in the United States. It is a state college in the Florida College System and offers associate and bachelor's degrees.
