Metropolitan State University of Denver was founded in 1965 as an opportunity school, and is known for keeping tuition among the lowest of Colorado's four-year schools. It was Metropolitan State College from 1965 to 1990, Metropolitan State College of Denver from 1990 to 2012, and became a university on April 18, 2012. It was the first university to advocate for DREAMers, offering in-state tuition under Colorado's ASSET bill. Its 126-acre urban campus sits on the Auraria Campus, shared with the University of Colorado Denver and the Community College of Denver, with the Tivoli Student Union in a former brewery. Fall 2025 enrollment was 18,336, of whom 17,111 were undergraduates. It has four colleges and two schools, is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and its Roadrunners compete in NCAA Division II in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, winning men's basketball titles in 2000 and 2002.
