Mercer University is a private university founded in 1833 by Georgia Baptists in Penfield as Mercer Institute, named for the Baptist leader Jesse Mercer. The first term enrolled 39 students under principal Billington Sanders. The school gained university status in the late 1830s (Wikipedia says 1837, Mercer's own timeline 1838) and relocated to Macon around 1870-1871. Wikipedia describes it as Georgia's oldest private university, with more than 9,000 students across 12 colleges and schools. First-year applicants can apply through either the Common Application or Mercer's own application; the university states no preference. Review begins with the high school transcript, and standardized test scores are considered only if the applicant chooses to submit them. Mercer also reads the full application for interests, goals and fit. Federal data for fall 2024 shows about 6,760 first-year applicants out of 9,813 were admitted.
