William James College, formerly the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP), was founded in 1974 by a group of Massachusetts psychologists seeking an alternative to traditional PhD training, initially sharing space at the former Newton College of the Sacred Heart. Its first class of 46 students joined 10 faculty in September 1977, with Dr. Bruce Weiss as first president. It adopted its current name on May 7, 2015, honoring psychologist William James, and has an additional campus in Providence, Rhode Island. Its site lists PsyD programs in Clinical and Leadership Psychology, master's programs including Applied Behavior Analysis, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Psychology and Organizational Psychology, graduate certificates, and an undergraduate BS in Psychology and Human Services.
