Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) is a public visual arts college in Boston's Fenway area on Huntington Avenue. It was founded in 1873 as the Massachusetts Normal Art School to train art teachers, and it is the only independent public college of art and design in the United States. MassArt offers undergraduate and graduate programs in fine arts, design, architecture-related studies and art education. Admission is portfolio-driven: first-time applicants submit 12-15 pieces of recent work through the MassArt Applicant Portal along with a Common App essay of at least 500 words and a transcript. MassArt no longer requires SAT or ACT scores and does not factor them into decisions. Music, theater and creative writing are not reviewed because the college focuses on visual art. Deadlines include Early Action on December 1 and a priority deadline of February 15.
