Manchester Metropolitan University traces itself to 7 April 1824, when the Manchester Mechanics' Institute was set up to teach artisans the scientific principles behind their trades and support the city's textile and engineering industries. The Manchester School of Design followed in 1838. The institution became Manchester Polytechnic in 1970 and gained university status in 1992. A £350 million investment has consolidated seven campuses into two, at All Saints and Birley Fields. It had 39,095 students in 2022/23.
