Maine College of Art & Design, or MECA&D, is a private art and design college in Portland, Maine. It was founded in 1882 as the Portland School of Art, making it the oldest arts educational institution in Maine, later became Maine College of Art and adopted its current name in August 2021 to reflect its emphasis on design. The urban campus is based at 522 Congress Street in a former department store building. Wikipedia reports about 500 students, most of them undergraduates. The college offers a BFA with majors such as animation and game art, graphic design and textile and fashion design, plus an MFA, and it operates the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. It is accredited by NECHE and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Applicants are judged mainly on portfolio strength alongside academics.
