The MGH Institute of Health Professions is a graduate school of health professions founded by Massachusetts General Hospital. MGH received degree-granting authority from the Commonwealth in 1977, and the Institute officially opened in 1980, admitting its first master's students in physical therapy and social work in Ruth Sleeper Hall at Mass General. It became a separate corporation in 1985 and bought a building in the Charlestown Navy Yard in 2000, which opened in December 2001 after renovation. It now occupies about 168,000 square feet in six buildings. Programs include nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, speech-language pathology, genetic counseling, health professions education and a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences. Its website states the name is changing to Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions.
