Loyola University Chicago, Illinois

Loyola University Chicago began in 1870 as St. Ignatius College, opened by the Jesuits on Chicago's near west side under Arnold Damen, S.J. The State of Illinois rechartered it as Loyola University in 1909, and over the following decades the school moved north to the Rogers Park lakefront, where the Lake Shore Campus still stands. A law school arrived in 1908, medicine a year later and business in 1922. In 1962 Loyola opened a Rome Center for Liberal Arts, the first American university-sponsored programme in Rome, and in 1991 it absorbed neighbouring Mundelein College from the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Wikipedia describes it as the fourth largest Catholic university in the United States by enrollment. The university remains Jesuit and Catholic in character, with undergraduate, graduate and professional schools in Chicago and a continuing connection to its Rome campus. Athletic teams compete as the Ramblers, and the campus sits along Lake Michigan on the city's North Side.
