Loughborough began in 1909 as a small technical institute and grew into Loughborough University of Technology, which received its charter in 1966, before taking its present name in 1996. It sits on the largest single-site green campus in the UK, in Leicestershire between Leicester and Nottingham. The university is best known for sport: in 2021 its students, alumni and associated athletes won 35 medals at the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, and names such as Sebastian Coe and Paula Radcliffe passed through it. It also has an indoor athletics centre, an outdoor stadium and a 50m pool. Nineteen schools and departments teach more than 18,500 students, and it topped the Times Higher Education Student Experience survey eight times between 2006 and 2018.
