London South Bank University began life as the Borough Polytechnic Institute on 30 September 1892, set up by local solicitor Edric Bayley to offer technical education in Elephant and Castle, then an area of severe poverty. The polytechnic bought the old Borough Road Training College to house itself, and the main entrance is still at 103 Borough Road. Its early curriculum was built around the industries of Southwark so that local people could improve their job prospects. In 2024/25 the university had 15,760 students, of whom 12,460 were undergraduates and 3,300 postgraduates.
