The London School of Economics was founded in 1895 by Sidney and Beatrice Webb together with Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw, and its first lectures were held that October in rooms on John Street. It specialises in the pure and applied social sciences. In 1920 King George V laid the foundation of the Old Building at Clare Market and Houghton Street, off the Aldwych, and Houghton Street is still the school's home. Sixteen people from the School have gone on to win Nobel Prizes, and LSE is a member of the University of London federation.
