London Metropolitan University was formed on 1 August 2002 by merging the University of North London with London Guildhall University, the first merger between two universities in the UK. The University of North London had itself become a university in 1992, having been the Polytechnic of North London. The former UNL premises on Holloway Road and Highbury Grove in Islington now form the North Campus, and the Aldgate Campus sits in the Aldgate and Whitechapel area. Its heritage stretches back to 1848 through the institutions it absorbed.
