Leeds Beckett University was founded as the Leeds Mechanics' Institute in 1824 by members of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society to offer education to working people, starting in two rooms on Park Row. It then grew through mergers: the Leeds Institute of Science, Art and Literature (1897), City of Leeds Training College (1907), Carnegie College of Physical Training (1933), Leeds College of Technology (1937) and Leeds Polytechnic (1970). It became Leeds Metropolitan University in 1992 and took its current name in September 2014. It has city centre and Headingley campuses and almost 30,000 students.
