Lancaster University was established by royal charter in 1964, one of several new universities created in the 1960s. It began at St Leonard's Gate in the city centre and from 1967 moved to a purpose-built parkland campus at Bailrigg, about 4 km south of Lancaster. Undergraduates belong to one of eight colleges named after places in the historic county of Lancashire, and Bowland and Lonsdale were the first two, founded in 1964. Each college has its own residences, common rooms and bars. There were 18,620 students in 2024/25.
