Knox College is a private liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois. It received its charter in February 1837 as Knox Manual Labor College, organized by the Rev. George Washington Gale, a social reformer from New York, and the name changed to Knox College in 1857. Britannica says the school opened in 1843, so 1837 marks the charter rather than the first classes. On October 7, 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held their fifth debate on campus before more than 15,000 people, the largest crowd of the seven debates, and plaques at Old Main mark the event. Enrollment is about 1,100 per Britannica. Knox has been test-optional since 2005, has no application fee and is a Coalition member. Among applicants who submit scores, the middle 50% ranges are ACT 22-32 and SAT 1195-1368.
