King's College London was established by royal charter in 1829 under the patronage of King George IV and the Duke of Wellington, and in 1836 became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London. Its original Strand Campus, beside Somerset House, holds the Grade I listed King's Building of 1831 by Sir Robert Smirke and a chapel redesigned by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1864. King's serves more than 33,000 students from over 190 countries, is the sixth-largest UK university by enrolment, and receives over 68,000 undergraduate applications a year.
