Khalifa University traces its history back to 1989, when Etisalat University College was established by the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation in Sharjah to build local talent in engineering and applied sciences. In 2000 the Petroleum Institute was founded with support from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, graduating its first engineering cohort, including its first female students, in 2006. In 2007, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) was established and absorbed Etisalat University College, while the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology was created the same year as the region's first research-intensive graduate university focused on advanced energy and sustainable technologies. In 2017, a presidential decree from Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan merged KUSTAR, Masdar Institute and the Petroleum Institute into the single Khalifa University of Science and Technology that exists today.
