The Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) was founded on 28 September 1991 under UAE Federal Decree Law No. 9 as the country's highest military college, established to prepare selected officers for command positions across the armed forces. Its statute was set on 15 October 1991, and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, formally inaugurated the college on 20 January 1992. In 1994 its coursework was restructured from general command and staff courses into joint command and staff courses, with curricula modified to serve all branches of the UAE Armed Forces, a format the college has followed since Course 8.
