Jacksonville University was established on April 16, 1934 as Jacksonville Junior College and kept that name until September 1956. It awarded its first four-year degrees as Jacksonville University in June 1959. The private university has about 4,200 students, with 2,946 undergraduates and 1,301 postgraduates in fall 2024. Its athletic teams are the Dolphins, a nickname that came from a 1947 naming contest after Green Dolphins won the vote on December 12 of that year and was later shortened. JU fields 18 varsity teams in NCAA Division I, and baseball began play in 1957. First-year applicants are reviewed on a rolling basis and the university is test optional, though certain programs such as honors, the 4+1 program and direct-entry nursing may still ask for scores. Applicants submit transcripts or GED scores, and fine arts majors audition or send a portfolio.
