The Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) was founded in 2005 by royal decree of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as an independent, government-backed body with its own financial and administrative independence, set up specifically to deliver career-based technical education in English at secondary and tertiary levels rather than following the UAE's more academically oriented mainstream school system. Its network includes the Applied Technology High Schools, Fatima College of Health Sciences, and Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, which IAT established in 2010 to train technologists and engineers through a combined academic and professional training model that blends classroom learning with hands-on workplace-style preparation. Programme areas span engineering, aviation, health sciences and information technology, reflecting sectors where the UAE has actively sought to build a home-grown technical workforce rather than relying solely on expatriate specialists.
