Indian River State College started as Indian River Junior College, authorized by the Florida Legislature in 1959 and based in Fort Pierce. The city donated 87 acres, and the college relocated to its Virginia Avenue campus in 1963. In 1965 it merged with Lincoln Junior College to create one institution serving Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties, and in 1970 it was renamed Indian River Community College. It received accreditation to offer bachelor's degrees in 2007, and in July 2008 a bill signed by Governor Charlie Crist placed it in the State College Pilot Project, leading to the Indian River State College name. IRSC Online launched in 2013. Campuses now span four Treasure Coast counties, and Wikipedia lists 14,862 undergraduates for fall 2022. The input address in Indiantown is a Martin County site, while the main campus is in Fort Pierce.
