Illinois Wesleyan University was founded in 1850 in Bloomington by about thirty local civic and Methodist leaders, which explains the Wesleyan in its name. The first year was preparatory, with collegiate classes starting in 1851. The board admitted Black students in 1867 and women in 1870, and Hannah I. Shur, the first woman graduate, finished in 1872. A School of Law ran from 1873 to 1928, nursing education began in 1923 through a partnership with the Brokaw School of Nursing, the College of Liberal Arts was organized in 1906 and the College of Fine Arts in 1948. The university's 2025 commencement program describes it as exclusively undergraduate, with about 1,582 students from 41 states and 27 countries. It is a small private campus in central Illinois, and nursing applicants who apply without test scores must interview with the School of Nursing before they can be considered for that programme.
