Illinois Institute of Technology, branded Illinois Tech, is a private research university in Chicago, Illinois. Its present name dates from the 1940 merger of the Armour Institute and the Lewis Institute, though its history traces to 1890. Philip Danforth Armour's $1 million gift founded Armour Institute, and Lewis Institute opened in 1895 from the estate of hardware merchant Allen C. Lewis, offering liberal arts and engineering to men and women. The trustees voted to merge on October 26, 1939, and a Cook County circuit court decision on April 23, 1940 solidified it. Henry T. Heald led the school from 1940 to 1952. Wikipedia versions list 8,834 students for fall 2024. Illinois Tech does not require standardized tests for any first-year, transfer or international applicant, and superscores any scores that are submitted.
