Illinois College in Jacksonville was founded in 1829 by members of the Yale Band, seven Yale students who came west to start a college, and John M. Ellis, a Presbyterian missionary, shaped the plan. It was the second college founded in Illinois but the first to grant a degree, in 1835. Edward Beecher was first president, and Beecher Hall, built in 1829, is still used. The college hosted the state's first medical school from 1843 to 1848 and became a stop on the Underground Railroad. Wikipedia lists 942 students for fall 2024, and the college has added fully online programmes for working adults. It is a small private liberal arts college, and first-year applicants may choose whether to submit SAT or ACT scores, with Common App listing a School Report and official transcript as the core materials.
