Heriot-Watt University began in 1821 as the Edinburgh School of Arts, the world's first Mechanics' Institute, founded by the linen merchant and social reformer Leonard Horner and the clockmaker Robert Bryson. Its first lecture, on chemistry, was on 16 October 1821, and 452 students enrolled within a month. In 1852 it was renamed the Watt Institution and School of Arts in memory of James Watt, and it received a royal charter as a university in 1966. Its main campus is a 380-acre site at Riccarton on the south-western edge of Edinburgh, with further campuses in the Scottish Borders, Orkney, Dubai and Malaysia. The global student population is around 31,000.
