Heriot-Watt University, whose main campus was founded in Edinburgh in 1821 as the world's first mechanics institute, opened its Dubai campus in 2005 as the first overseas university campus to be established in Dubai International Academic City, giving it one of the longest track records among the branch campuses now operating in the emirate. In 2021, the same year Heriot-Watt marked its 200th anniversary, the Dubai campus relocated to a new, digitally enabled site in Dubai Knowledge Park, moving staff and students into more modern facilities. Over nearly two decades in the UAE, the campus has grown from an initial specialised offering into a comprehensive provider of more than 50 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes spanning business, accounting and finance, engineering, construction, data science and computing and artificial intelligence, psychology, and architecture and design. This range reflects the university's original UK strengths in management, engineering and the built environment, extended into newer areas such as AI and data science as demand in the region has shifted.
